PROBLEM: Our ward doesn’t have a comprehensive multi-purpose
community center that benefits every segment of the community.
SOLUTION: As alderman I will work to build a community center
that will give young people a safe place to play and continue learning
after school. It will offer tutoring, access to computers, sports and
other activities to keep kids and families engaged. Services and
activities aimed towards our large number of senior citizens will also
be available.
To address the needs of unemployed and under employed adults, the
center will offer job training programs and a career clothes closet
In addition, the center will also offer health care assistance. Other
programs would include small business support services and
resource rooms for teachers.
PARKS
PROBLEM: Several parks in the 6th Ward are neglected and need
capital improvements to fully serve the community. One park floods
in the summer and is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Others have
no toilets so the kids relieve themselves outdoors and others have no
field house or central meeting place for programs and activities.
What’s more, we have undeveloped park land that could be used for
play lots or community gardens. Not to mention, an increasing gang
presence that has frightened 6th ward residents.
SOLUTION: In 2005, several community park boards joined together
to increase funding to 6th Ward parks. These boards were able to
secure a commitment of $3 million towards park improvements.
However, this money will ONLY be provided if matching funds are
found.
As alderman, I will actively work with our park boards to ensure that
we get the funding necessary to make our parks beautiful, safe and
peaceful havens for all.
