| “You can do anything you set your mind to—even eat an elephant—
as long as you do it one bite at a time.” |
| The mother of 6th Ward Aldermanic Candidate KARIN NORINGTON-REAVES repeatedly recited
the above motivational motto to help prepare Karin as a young girl for the many challenges she
would face as an adult. During her 15 year career working as an elementary school teacher, lobbyist
and litigator, that motto taught Karin to value patience, perseverance and commitment.
Ultimately, it shaped and influenced Karin’s goal to become a dedicated public servant to the disenfranchised,
under-privileged and uninformed. Some of her accomplishments include:
|
 |
Graduate of Northwestern University (B.A. Spanish Language and Literature) and Southern
Methodist University Law School (J.D.). Fluent in Spanish, highly proficient in Italian and
Portuguese. |
 |
Consumer advocate, legal counsel and lobbyist for the Citizens Utility Board (CUB). Fought for
fair telecommunication, gas and electric laws in Illinois (2000-2003). |
 |
Co-wrote the consumer protection portions of the 2001 Illinois Telecommunications Act to compensate
consumers suffering from poor service quality as well as provide citizens with low-cost
options for phone service. |
 |
Drafted in 2002 portions of the Alternative Gas Supplier law that both regulates and prevents consumer fraud by alternative gas companies. |
 |
Executive Director of Teach For America’s Chicago region. Oversaw the placement and support of 130 teachers in Chicago Public Schools (2003-2004). |
 |
Director of School and Corporate Relations – Innovations for Learning, an education non-profit organization (2005 to present). |
 |
Adjunct Professor at Loyola University School of Law, Institute for Health Law (2001 to present). |
|
Karin has also worked as a Trial Attorney at the U. S. Department of Justice and the Office of the
Attorney General for the State of Maryland. At the request of 6th Ward citizens wanting a fresh
viewpoint on many of the ward’s problems, Karin decided to undertake the challenge to run for
Alderman.
